Studio BBB’s MONOWAVE game has captured global attention, securing the Best Student Game award at the 2025 Indie Game Award during the Taipei Game Show. The Studio BBB MONOWAVE game is an innovative emotional puzzle experience that blends unique mechanics and deeply human emotions, setting it apart from traditional games in the genre.

From Student Project to Studio BBB’s Indie Spotlight

What began as a university project has grown into a standout indie title. The team formed Studio BBB, named after the Korean word 비주류 (bi-ju-ryu), meaning “non-mainstream.” The “Triple B” stands for Bold, Brave, and a bit Offbeat, reflecting their mission to break conventions with emotionally driven game design.

What Makes Studio BBB’s MONOWAVE Unique?

Studio BBB MONOWAVE isn’t just a puzzle game—it’s a deep emotional experience. The game centers around four key emotions: joy, anger, sadness, and anxiety. Each feeling grants players different ways to engage with the environment, offering unique puzzle-solving mechanics.

Initially inspired by elemental transformations, the team pivoted to focus on human emotions, drawing from psychological and philosophical sources, especially Paul Ekman’s emotion classification. Personal stories also shaped the game’s design—such as a mechanic where music connects players to NPCs, and a world clouded by anxiety that only joy-filled butterflies can clear.

Visually, the game combines scratch art and one-line drawings, giving it a minimalist yet expressive style.

Studio BBB’s Global Debut and Positive Reception at the Taipei Game Show

The team’s international debut at the Taipei Game Show was made possible with support from Korea’s Creative Content Agency (KOCCA). Reactions from players in Taiwan, ranging from deep curiosity to heartfelt excitement, reaffirmed the universal power of emotion. Studio BBB firmly believes that feelings transcend both language and culture, and their success at the show proved just that.
