Hades II: Supergiant Games Delivers Another Critical and Commercial Triumph

Published on:

Supergiant Games has done it again. Following the monumental success of the original Hades, the studio’s highly anticipated sequel, Hades II, has officially launched in full release and is already being hailed as one of the standout titles of 2025. After spending over a year in Early Access, Hades II has emerged as both a critical darling and a commercial hit — solidifying Supergiant’s reputation as one of the most consistent developers in the industry.

Critical Acclaim and Record-Breaking Launch

Since its 1.0 release in late September 2025, Hades II has received universal acclaim from critics and players alike. On Metacritic, it currently holds a score of 94/100, marking it as one of the highest-rated games of the year. On Steam, the game enjoys a “Very Positive” rating, with over 90% of player reviews praising its expanded gameplay, storytelling, and art direction.

The title also shattered records on launch, reaching over 112,000 concurrent players on Steam — more than doubling the peak player count of the original Hades. This milestone reflects both the strength of the franchise and the trust players have in Supergiant’s craftsmanship.

Evolving the Roguelike Formula

Hades II builds upon the foundation of its predecessor while introducing fresh gameplay systems and a deeper narrative. Players now take on the role of Melinoë, Princess of the Underworld and sister to Zagreus, as she wages war against Chronos, the Titan of Time. The game expands on the roguelike formula with new weapons, witchcraft-based mechanics, and a broader cast of Olympian gods offering boons.

Early Access feedback has clearly shaped the final product, resulting in refined combat, enhanced progression systems, and more narrative depth. The game’s art direction remains a highlight, featuring hand-drawn animations, atmospheric music, and Supergiant’s signature voice acting and storytelling.

Technical Excellence and Accessibility

Hades II is available on PC (Steam and Epic Games Store) and Nintendo Switch, with support for cross-save between platforms — a feature highly praised by the community. The new Nintendo Switch 2 version offers performance up to 120fps in docked mode, ensuring fluid gameplay that matches its fast-paced combat.

A physical edition for the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 is slated for release later this year, giving fans a tangible collectible to commemorate the sequel’s success.

The Legacy Continues

Supergiant Games has once again proven its ability to innovate within familiar genres. Hades II doesn’t simply replicate what made the first game great — it evolves it, offering a richer and more ambitious experience that resonates with both newcomers and returning fans.

With critical praise, strong player engagement, and impressive technical polish, Hades II stands as one of 2025’s most celebrated titles and a benchmark for future roguelike releases.
